Obituary For Robert J. Nelson

Robert J. Nelson, 78, of Gilmanton passed away in his home after a multi-year battle with cancer on January 2, 2026. We would like to thank the fine people at St. Croix Hospice for the care they provided over the past few weeks, as well as the Mondovi EMTs and ambulance service. An additional thanks to those who attended his life celebration recently. He was very happy he could see and talk to friends and family.

Robert was born on February 17, 1947, in Miles City, Montana to Otis and Loretta Nelson. He moved to Osseo, Wisconsin in 1958, where he attended Osseo-Fairchild High School. A proud veteran, he was drafted and was deployed to Viet Nam. Upon returning to Osseo, an industrial accident left him with one arm. Regardless of his condition, he never considered it a disability. After his accident he went back to school to become a draftsman.

Robert was a man of many skills. He was a welder, drafter, machinist, CNC programmer, and restaurant owner, before becoming a full-time woodworker (self-taught). He was a very artistic person and could design whatever a customer wanted from simply a sketch or just an idea. After more than 20 years, he retired from taking woodworking orders and spent time making jewelry, stained glass, painting, and his passion for model trains. He loved family and helping people whenever he could.

Robert was preceded in death by his parents and numerous family members. He leaves behind his loving wife Sandy, his 3 children Chris, Joe, and Erica, along with many family and friends. Bob will be missed by many.

A private ceremony will take place at a later date.
