Obituary For Roy Francis Smits
Roy F. Smits, 87, of Eau Claire, passed away peacefully on Thursday, August 28, 2025, at Dove Healthcare-West, surrounded by his loving family.
Born on October 19, 1937, to Harold and Mabel (Gauthier) Smits in Green Bay, Wisconsin, Roy lived a full and rich life marked by love, dedication, and hard work. As a Roadmaster for the Chicago Northwestern Railroad, Roy spent many years ensuring the smooth operation of the trains over the tracks he maintained. His commitment to service extended beyond his career as he also proudly served as an Army Reservist and as a volunteer for the Meals on Wheels program for many years, driven by his belief that no one should ever go without a warm meal.
Roy had a hands-on approach to life, and it was no surprise that he found great joy in crafting, building, and remodeling. His family recalls how he spent countless hours meticulously expanding and upgrading the cabin at his treasured property up north. Whether working on his home or at the cabin, his craftsmanship was a testament to his meticulous nature and dedication to quality. He always had a project in the works, and his work ethic was an inspiration to all who knew him.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Mary Lou, the love of his life, with whom he spent 38 beautiful years before her passing. Together, they built a family and a legacy that lives on in their children, Julie Bollinger (Wayne), Brian Smits (Rita), Paul Smits (Lynn), Cheryl Lawrence (Roger), Dave Smits (Kari), and Kevin Smits (Mariah). Roy was also a proud grandfather of twenty grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, and several step-grandchildren.
Roy is survived by his second wife, Dawn; and sisters and brothers, Mary Powers, Lynda Heuvelmans, Jim Smits and Tom Smits.
A private burial will be held at Lakeview Cemetery. Friends and loved ones are invited to leave condolences online at www.smithfuneralec.com.
Roy will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing him. His warmth, humor, and kindness will continue to live on in the hearts of those who loved him. As a family, we'll forever cherish the memory of his steadfast nature and the love he showed to us all. Rest in peace, Dad, Grandpa, and Great-Grandpa.
