Obituary For Gregory John Bauer

Gregory J. Bauer, age 71, of Eau Claire, passed away peacefully on Friday, December 12, 2025, at Milestone Senior Living in Eau Claire.

Greg was born on November 17, 1954, in Eau Claire, Wisconsin, to Lawrence and Burnedette (Teela) Bauer. He married Linda Held on November 19, 1994, at Christ Church Cathedral. Greg devoted his career to education, teaching in several communities before retiring as an instructor at the Black River Falls Correctional Institution.

Greg and Linda enjoyed traveling together, especially their annual trips to Florida, where he loved spending time on the beach. He had a deep appreciation for nature, particularly working on his land, and treasured time spent with his family. Greg also enjoyed playing cards and visiting the casino.

Greg is survived by his wife, Linda; his siblings, Lyle, Daniel, Carolyn (Marshall) Flanders, Lynette (Randy) Ballard, and Scott; along with many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Lawrence and Burnedette; his sister, Carole; and his sister-in-law, Faith.

The family extends a heartfelt thank you to the staff at Milestone Senior Living, Heartland Hospice, and Mayo Health Systems for their compassionate care.

A memorial service will be held on Monday, December 29, 2025, at 12:00 p.m. at Smith Funeral Chapel. Visitation will take place one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

So sorry to hear about Greg's passing! He was a wonderful man. I knew Greg and Linda through various Ymca programs I led or am currently leading. They were regulars in our Brain and Body Fitness Program and were a wonderful part of class. Thinking of you, especially, Linda! In love and sympathy, Laurie Pettis.

Will miss sharing our Tootsie Pops and catching up on the beach each year. Loved relaxing and rejuvenating with you uncle Greg. Love you and miss you. Who's going to speculate on life with me now and all things related to education? Love ❤️ Jamie

It's funny the small, unexpected things that end up staying with you. When my sister and I were kids, my parents would occasionally "stash" us with a relative in Eau Claire for the weekend. We were always thrilled when it was Uncle Greg's turn. Whether by luck or by default (ha!), Greg—and his wife Linda—had a way of making those weekends feel special. One of those weekends was the first time I ever played racquetball. Greg took us to the YMCA and taught us how to play, patiently and with that quiet encouragement that made you feel capable just for trying. It stuck. To this day, racquetball is one of my favorite pastimes—though I suspect Greg would get a good laugh knowing I never really improved beyond that very first lesson, when I was seven years old. That's how I'll always remember him: someone who didn't just take care of us, but gave us memories, confidence, and moments that lasted far longer than the weekend itself. The kind of influence that shows up years later, in the most ordinary and unexpected ways. -Jordan

Greg and I carpooled to work together at Jackson Correctional for years. He had a quirky sense of humor, which I enjoyed very much. So fast, so sad... David Flieger Osseo, WI
