Obituary For Michael J. Welter

Michael J. Welter, 79, of Elk Mound passed away on Saturday, November 15th 2025, at his home.

Mike was born on September 25, 1946, to Ray and Lilah (Best) Welter in Eau Claire, Wisconsin. He graduated from Memorial High School in 1964. Mike went to the Technical College for accounting before joining the military.

Mike always enjoyed music, he played rhythm guitar for the “Demons” during high school, playing local venues. He then enlisted into the United States Navy in 1966. While serving he was a gunner on The USS Coontz Destroyer. He also worked in the office on the USS Maddox. Mike served his country during the Vietnam War. He resigned from the Navy in 1970.

Mike met the love of his life Jean Dahl in 1968. They got married on October 23, 1971. They had their beautiful daughter Laurie Jean in 1973. Mike was employed with Kell Container Corporation in Chippewa Falls working as a truck driver and later worked in the warehouse as a forklift operator. He retired after 40 years of service.

Mike enjoyed being with family, going on picnics, playing horseshoe, croquet (we think he may have cheated), gardening, grilling, bonfires and listening to music.

Mike is survived by his wife, Jean Welter; daughter, Laurie (Tim) Burgess and their daughters, Kaitlyn Basley (Jacob Lawrence) and Jocelin Burgess.

He is further survived by many special nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Mike was preceded in death by his parents, Ray Welter and Lilah Best (Miller); stepdad, Pinky Miller; in-laws, Elwood & Leona Dahl; and nephew, Daryl Dahl.

A special thank you to Oakleaf Clinic and staff for the excellent care they provided for Mike.

A private Celebration of Life will be held Saturday, November 29th for close family and friends.
