Mamie Lee Fleming, a longtime resident of the Altoona area, passed away Friday, March 22, 2019 at Clearwater Care Center.
Mamie was born in North Carolina to late Mamie Nora King and the late Jesse Lee King. Mamie was raised in Philadelphia, where she received her high school diploma from Germantown High School. She then went into the health care rehabilitation sector for her career until she became disabled due to a car accident and had an adverse reaction to pain medication, which burned 90 percent of the skin off her body. Despite her disability, Mamie was always optimistic, vibrant, and her heart resided with Christ. Mamie relocated from Philly to Altoona in 2002 to be near her brother and family of Fall Creek.
Mamie lived a full life doing the things that she loved, by the time she became a teenager she was writing poetry, drawing, playing the piano and singing. She also learned how to make her own clothes and do many other arts and crafts (believe it or not she also worked on cars and did carpentry work). Mamie was also sort of a maverick in sports such as drag racing, playing basketball, bowling, and baseball.
Mamie was a bit of a socialite; meeting and gathering life-long friends along the way. She had an infectious smile and beautiful heart that no one could resist. she enjoyed: “America’s got Talent,” the “Animal Channel,” singing karaoke, and watching movies. Her number one pastime was bingo, which she played with her friends. She loved sharing food brought into the nursing home by family and friends, such pepperoni pizza, burgers, and Chinese food.
I could go on and on about my beautiful sister who had friends galore. We all loved her dearly and she loved us. She was not only a sister and an aunt but a best friend. She was a true beacon of light to all who came across her path. Rest in Peace our angel, Mamie because you sure earned your wings while on this earth.
To Friends: Thank you for standing with her and all of us all when times were hard. Cancer tried to take our smiles but you were all there. We shared each other’s stories, smiles and tears, but most of all we shared our love which will never die. Instead, it will bloom forever in our souls into the afterlife. Please be strong because the world needs people like you, true friends.
Mamie is survived by her two brothers: Maurice McIntyre Sr. of Fall Creek, WI and William King of Philadelphia, PA. She is also survived by her numerous nieces and nephews: Charleen McIntyre of Kaiserslauten, Germany, Maurice McIntyre Jr. of Eau Claire, WI, Doeneah McIntyre of Altoona, WI, Sade Cook of Milwaukee, WI, Jaboidia McIntyre of St. Paul, Kleara McIntyre of St. Paul, LeAndre McIntyre of Fall Creek, and others of Philadelphia, PA. She is also survived by her grand-niece Amelia Goettl of Altoona who gave her much love and joy.
