Conrad Derek Steiner was born May 21, 2021, at Children’s Hospital, Minneapolis. He was diagnosed early in the pregnancy with Trisomy 13 (Patau Syndrome) a very rare genetic disorder. After spending the first 9 months of his life at Children’s-Minneapolis he miraculously was able to come home to Eau Claire, WI, on March 1, 2022.
Over the last month of his life Conrad’s heart began to show increased signs of heart failure. Sadly, on July 2, 2023, Conrad decided he was ready to wear his angel wings at the age of 2 years, 1 month, 12 days. Conrad passed away at home with his loving Mama and Papa Bear by his side and his puppy Wicket and kitty Momen. Conrad lived each day to the fullest. His amazing strength and drive to show those around him that his complex medical needs would not prevent him from living his best life was such a gift and joy to watch. He was a true warrior as 80% of babies with Trisomy 13 don’t live past the age of 1. Conrad “Coco” loved playing with his puppy, Wicket and Kitty, Momen, reading books and helping to turn the pages, playing with his toys, dancing, and playing row the boat, taking walks around his neighborhood, singing songs with his parents and sitting in his chair and playing with his toy bar. He especially loved balloons and his precious fans. He had an infectious smile and laugh both made each day brighter and joyful. Over the last few months Conrad found his little voice and would spend some days chatting away with his nurses and he was also learning to wave goodbye. Conrad was an amazing boy and touched all of those who met him.
Conrad is survived by his parents, Derek and Monique (Davis); brother, Jordan Eiselt; his grandparents, Michael and Linda (De la Cruz) Davis, John and Ann (Bjorgo) Steiner; Uncles Drew (Nicole Addabbo) Steiner, Dylan (Cheyenne) Steiner; Cousins Hattie, Wade, Eve Steiner; great grandmother, Edna (Gilbertson) Bjorgo.
Preceding in his death Great Grandparents, Iner Bjorgo, Robert and Betty Steiner, Don and Rica Davis, Great Grandmother Justa Lum Suc and Great Uncle Father Conrado Dela Cruz.
Conrad and his family would like to thank all the nurses, doctors and specialists that cared for him when he was hospitalized in the NICU, ICC and PICU at Children’s Minneapolis, the PICU at Children’s-St. Paul and PICU at Marshfield Children’s Hospital. A special thank you to the nurses with Hiawatha Home Care that spend countless hours providing care, love, and support to Conrad and his parents at home. A special thank you to Madison Henneman who opened her heart to Conrad and provided countless hours of happiness, companionship and care to Conrad for 2 years. We would also like to thank all the music therapists, physical therapists and occupational therapists that provided care and support to Conrad over the course of his life. Another special thank you to all our family and friends that provided support and love over the last 2 years, especially our dear neighbors who took care of Wicket and Momen when we were in the hospital with Conrad.
A funeral will be Friday, July 7, 2023, at 2:00 pm at St. James the Greater Catholic Church with Fr. Tom Krieg officiating. A visitation will be an hour prior to the service at the church on Friday. A burial will follow the service at Lakeview Cemetery. Friends and family may leave online condolences below.
Praying for peace and healing during this difficult time. May God be with you always.
My thoughts and prayers have been with you often since Conrad joined your family more than two years ago. What a treasure and a blessing to enjoy this little soul for awhile. God bless you, Derek and Monique, and grandparents Ann and John, and Great Grandma Edna and others with comfort and peace in the weeks and months to come.
I had the distinct honor of meeting Conrad, Monique, and Derek in the NICU. The love, perseverance and unity of this family were a sight to behold, and gave credence to the idea that each day is special and cherished in the lives of those who face medical complexity. Over the laughter and tears shared each day, Conrad proved to be a force of true will and desire to be seen and heard and appreciated for the beautiful miracle he was. My heart and love go out to you, Monique and Derek, and please know you were the best parents Conrad could have ever hoped for; your love for him was absolutely perfect and beautiful.
Monique and Derek
Thank you for inspiring me with your perseverance and selfless love. Conrad was a beautiful child who knew he was loved unconditionally. I loved his eyelashes and his big brown eyes! It was an honor to care for him. May God bless you abundantly and comfort you during this time of sorrow. You are in my thoughts and prayers . Magdalene, NNP
