Richard A. Nichols, 85 of Eau Claire passed away peacefully, in his sleep, in the early morning of Tuesday, August 15, 2017 at Dove Healthcare-West in Eau Claire.

Richard was born on February 19, 1932 to Louis and Anna (Thalacker) Nichols in Cleghorn, Wisconsin.  He was one of 14 children.  He married Hazel Smith on February 13, 1971.

He farmed and drove truck most of his life.  He especially loved working with his horses on the farm.  Richard and Hazel farmed and milked cows for 15 years; while he also worked on construction where he drove truck.  When he would get home late from work, Hazel and step-son, Bruce would have the milking and other chores all done.

Richard loved “real” country music, unlike what is commonly called “country” today, as well as listening to polka music.  He spent countless hours playing solitaire, and loved to travel.

Richard will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by his wife of 46 years, Hazel.  He is also survived by two sons, Rick and Ron; step-son, Bruce (Jen) Smith; siblings; and many other family members.  He had a special place in his heart for grandsons, Dustin and Charles Smith, as well as other grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Beatrice, Marjorie, and Josephine; and brother, Alfred.

Funeral services will be Saturday, August 19, 2017 at 10:00 am at Smith Funeral Chapel.  Visitation will be one hour prior to the services on Saturday at the funeral home.  Burial will follow the service at Lakeview Cemetery.  Friends and family may leave online condolences at www.smithfuneralec.com.
